On March 18, pupils from the Speia, Grigoriopol have had the first hours in the tailor and decorative arts workshops, opened in the local school.

This was possible due to the project “Development of creative and professional skills for children from socially vulnerable families from Speia village, Grigoriopol, given the experience of PO Filocalia on the right bank of Nistru River”, implemented in partnership with the NGO ” Надежда и будущее” with the assistance of the “support to Confidence Building Measures”, financed by the European Union co-funded and implemented by the United Nations Development Program, which aims to promote confidence between both banks.

The room was furnished and equipped with sewing machines, overlock, ironing board and other utensils, to give girls the opportunity to learn the art of needle and various techniques of decorative art.

On this special day, pupils were initiated in the sewing art by Speia’s teachers and teachers from other workshops sponsored by PO Filocalia. Mrs. Mary from Cosnita village, Dubasari region, who is a tailoring teacher, was the one who guided the girls to work with the latest sewing machines. Each of the girls managed to sew at least one small pin cushion. Despite the idea that tailoring is an occupation for women, a boy was curious and brave enough to try and really like working at a sewing machine.

Girls from the decorative art workshop learned about the history of stained glass and also painted small works of art under the guidance of Mrs. Victoria – decorative art teacher at the Social center “Agapis” from Chisinau and “St. Filaret the Merciful” from Costeşti village, Ialoveni region. Although most of the pupils painted glass for the first time, the small works of art that could be enjoyed at the end of the class showed us how talented they are.

And in order not to leave without occupation the boys from the woodwork workshop, who are still waiting for the machines, we have invited with us Mr. Anatolii Tirnou, director and professor of woodworking from the Auxiliary Boarding School no. 5 from Chisinau. He gave theoretical information about what they will learn in the workshop and also have showed several works made by pupils from the right bank of Nistru.

The day spent in the company of teachers from both banks and with children from Speia, working together to give children a better education in the village, was particularly beautiful. Now we wait to admire their works, which is going to be the fruit of trust between people on the two sides.

This project is implemented with the assistance of the Programme ” Support to Confidence Building Measures” funded by the European Union, co-funded and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. The overall objective of the programme is to contribute to confidence building between both banks of the Nistru River by involving local authorities, civil society organisations, business community and other stakeholders, as well as through ensuring economic and social development of local communities.
